Canvas

Stretched like a drum over sturdy wooden stretcher frames. Primed with gesso (which is technically just Italian for “gypsum”. Which means I can never refer to the acrylic primer as “gesso” anymore. I’ve been living a lie. We all have.) Canvas gave way to the firm smoothness of birch panels, but I used plenty before the switch.

Divine Being Shitting Itself

Divine Being Shitting Itself • February 1999 • Oil on Canvas • 30″ x 24″

When I showed this to Ray, I didn’t know him very well. He flipped the painting on the easel. We were all quiet while he chinned his knuckles and stepped back.

“I was right,” he said. “It does look like a divine being shitting itself.

We hold that divine being in the highest estimation.

Red protects itself. No colour is as territorial. It stakes a claim, is on alert against the spectrum.
